Marble Beach

Friday, 26 September 2014 00:00
Published in Media

Marble beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Trincomalee area. The water is crystal blue and there are hardly any waves making it an excellent bathing spot. Before the war the beach was mainly used by Air Force officers and even now it is under the control of Air Force. You need to get approval to get to the beach, which can be obtained by the nearby China Bay Air Force camp. You need to pay an entrance fee of 20 rupees per person to enter the beach area. There are some huts available in the beach which were booked when we went there, but it is likely that you have to have a contact in Air Force to book them. The name Marble beach comes from the Marble stones found in the area. There are lifeguards in the area so you can enjoy a bath without the fear of drowning, and you can go a fair distance towards the sea because of shallow waters. Another thing I noticed was the water did not have the salt taste. There is a restaurant near the beach maintained by the Air Force, Although the food was great the price tag was a bit on the high side. For various other attractions nearby you can check out attractions near Trincomalee.

Horton Plains

Friday, 26 September 2014 00:00
Published in Media

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. This plateau at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 metres (6,900–7,500 ft) is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. This region was designated a national park in 1988. It is also a popular tourist destination and is situated 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Ohiya, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the world famous Ohiya Gap/Dondra Watch and 32 kilometres (20 mi) from Nuwara Eliya.

The Horton Plains are the headwaters of three major Sri Lankan rivers, the Mahaweli, Kelani, and Walawe. In Sinhala the plains are known as Maha Eliya Plains. Stone tools dating back to Balangoda culture have been found here. The plains' vegetation is grasslands interspersed with montane forest and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer feature as typical mammals and the park is also an Important Bird Area with many species not only endemic to Sri Lanka but restricted to the Horton Plains. Forest dieback is one of the major threats to the park and some studies suggest that it is caused by a natural phenomenon.

Knuckles

Friday, 26 September 2014 00:00
Published in Media

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, in the Districts of Matale and Kandy. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resemble the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. Whilst this name was assigned by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning Mist-laden Mountain Range (Cooray, 1984).

The higher montane area is often robed in thick layers of cloud. In addition to its aesthetic value, the range is of great scientific interest. It is a climatic microcosm of the rest of Sri Lanka as the conditions of all the climatic zones in the country are exhibited in the massif. At higher elevations there is a series of isolated cloud forests, harbouring a variety of flora and fauna. Although the range constitutes approximately 0.03% of the island’s total area, it is home to a significantly higher proportion of the country’s biodiversity. The isolated Knuckles range harbours several relict, endemic flora and fauna that are distinct from central massif. More than 34 percent of Sri Lanka's endemic trees, shrubs, and herbs are only found in these forests.

Liptons Seat

Friday, 26 September 2014 00:00
Published in Media

Lipton’s Seat is considered the number 1 attraction in Haputale is a viewpoint on the Poonagala Mountain on Dambethanne Tea Estate.  The view from here is considered only rival to Worlds End view at Horton Plains. This view point is located at a perilous location at the top of Poonagala Mountain at a height of over 1950 meters with a sheer drop over one side and a 360 degree view.

Sir Thomas Lipton, the man who introduced the Lipton Brand Ceylon Tea entered in to purchasing tea estates in then Ceylon in 1890’s when the country was under the British rule. In 1890 Dambetenna which was 925 acres in size was purchased by him ahd he setup the largest tea processing factories in the Uva region.  It is said that this point was one of his favorite viewpoints where he surveyed his vast estate and that it one of the favorite places to entertain his guests. While the estate changed hands in 1930’s name of this view point survived as a remembrance to Sir Lipton.

It is said that on clear day that you can see as far as Trincomalee, Baticaloa, Matara , Badulla, Ratnapura and Monaragala. Even the light houses at Kirinda, Batticaloa and Matara Devinuwara can be seen in clear weather. But unfortunately Lipton’s seat is surrounded in Mist most of the day and the best time to visit the site is early morning where chances getting a clear a view is much better. Its advised to be at the point at least by 7 AM since the mist starts to settle in by 8 am.

The Lipton’s Seat lies about 18 km off Haputale Town. Take the Haputale Dambetanne Road for approx 9.5 km to reach the Dambetanne Tea Factory.  You need to take ticket for Rs 50/- pp to enter the tea estate.  From here the road is narrow and a hike would take about 2.5 hours. The location is also accessible by a 3 wheeler or a jeep.
